About

In an age of social media, there has been an emphasis of sharing perfect moments. There is the constant use of filters, and an avoidance of the reality that is beyond the screen. Social media has resulted in a society that is eager for instant gratification and perfection. In my work, I choose to do the opposite; I focus on the reality of my life. Working from memory, photography, and observation, I create diaristic work that explores a range of topics related to humanity.

The majority of my work are portraits and figurative paintings made using acrylic and gouache. When I am using these mediums, I apply the medium in a painterly format and use a lot of color. Color plays a significant role in my work, because it is another aspect of my work that reiterates the reality of life; life is colorful, even during the lowest moments.

I use photography as a tool in my practice; I am constantly using my phone to photograph spontaneous moments in my life. I try to not make it known that I am taking photos, so that I can have the most candid and natural results. I also have a collection of both personal photographs and ‘found’ vintage photographs that I like to pull from for inspiration. Regardless of the source that I use, my goal is to share these moments and be as honest as possible when doing so.

My work focuses on people in my life whom I share a significant relationship with, whether that be family or friends. Throughout my practice, my dad in particular has been a recurring subject. My dad’s health greatly declined to the result of several strokes, and due to this, he currently lives in a nursing home. Photographing and painting my dad has been a way for me to ‘spend’ time with my dad and to process the whole experience.

On the other hand, I also paint moments of life that are a source of calm and happiness. For example, paintings of sleeping loved ones, scenes at the pool, and even moments where family and friends are eating. As I mentioned before, my work flip flops between the lows and highs of life, and despite the feeling of the moment, they all represent a moment of reality. All of my work is a way for me to further understand my life as an individual and to explore the interconnectivity of humanity.

Despite my work being deeply personal, it simultaneously reflects experiences that are collectively shared. In this way, these paintings become time capsules for not only myself, but for others to visit and connect to. Painting is a way of looking back while moving forward.  While I recognize that everyone’s story is particular, my hope is that these paintings tell stories that are familiar, and in that way, mirror experiences, psychological states, and dynamics beyond my own.
