Future Ancient Artifacts

About

My first experience sculpting was in the mud just like every other child. Born in the artist town of Woodstock, NY and raised in another small art/college town in Ohio, Art is genetically imprinted in my DNA. Art was my favorite subject in school. With winning multiple art shows in grammar and high school, I was the student that skipped lunch to go to an extra art class. With the emergence of adulthood, motherhood, and growing responsibilities art took a back seat, but during the quarantine of 2020 I rediscovered my love for the mud.

As a nature lover, the influence of the elements of nature, earth, and our connection to it in a spiritual and physical sense is threaded throughout my work. Based in Houston and with the local area having an abundance of clay deposits, having a relationship with the clay and knowing that just as everything decomposes, so too will our bodies and so too has the bodies of those that came before us and the bodies our ancestors. Knowing that and approaching the clay with reverence and respect is a necessary component in my artwork.

Also incorporated in my art work is Black hair as apart of our identity. Black peoples are indigenous to all the lands around the globe, and in every culture hair has had its own story to tell. A hairstyle could tell you if someone was single and looking, married, or recently widowed, the path to take to freedom, social status, religion, rank within that religious practice, or occupation. The way one wore their hair gave onlookers a brief introduction of who they are before they even opened their mouth. The same still rings true for us today. Many of the ancient hairstyles have not been lost rather transmuted to fit the time. My art aims to explore, recapture and highlight the ancient ways of storytelling through the art of hair, highlighting Black presence and how that links us to our past, relates to our present and what path that will lead us to in the future.
