Artist Statement

In the present global narrative, there is an abundance of contradictions, including but not limited to the inherent bias of perspective implicit to any version of history; criticisms of capitalism participate more than ever in the conspicuous consumption; cultural nuances categorized as differences. As we encounter and digest these conflicting narratives, we are forced to determine whether they resonate with our version of reality. As seen in Guerrières, artwork created with photographs on textiles; which presents images of living women as standing-ins for past combatants, provides a connection made between foreign and domestic conceptions that are directly linked to our current position in the temporal scale; while challenging our understanding of the standards of historical narrative vis-à-vis reality  as it continues to affect our communities.

The constant reimagination of the space occupied by genderized concepts of behavior that are reciprocated and perpetuated haphazardly by and through an already morally and historically soiled foundation; which disavows the necessity for a resulting gendered driven response, provided a needed illumination to the cracking structure of gender in a society that upholds archaic concepts based in tradition, a wry morality or fear; which presents alternatives as reminiscences of a temporal regression.

In navigating reality, space and time are tools utilized to acquire knowledge, to coalesce experiences into identity, and to aid in unforeseen conditions. My work provides ideas, inquiries, and solutions to contemporary rumination by creating crucial connections throughout.
