Stefa Witt
About
I am influenced by Pop Art, the sparkly nature of opals, light prisms, nostalgia, and finding magical moments in the mundane. I knit, crochet, weave, macrame, latch hook, punch needle and create pom poms whenever humanly possible.
A lot of my work focuses on the transformational power of Art, whether that is for but one moment or a lifetime, is up to the viewer’s experience. I purposely challenge the idea of what Art is through my use of unorthodox materials to the physical places my work inhabits.
I am a seeker of everyday magic. I use my creativity to cast a spell and transcend mundane, everyday spaces into whimsical, unforgettable ones; that is why I often choose to exhibit in nontraditional places. The street, chainlink fences, public libraries and parks have all become my gallery walls.
Art is a part of our social fabric. Art as a whole belongs to the public. Everyone regardless of their education, income, or social status deserves to experience it. Participation in any act of Art is innately human and that expression deserves a more prominent focus in our culture.
I am also a yarn bomber. Similar to graffiti, yarn bombing is fleeting street art created with yarn. The yarn bomb may “go off” for one minute, one week, or stay installed for years. Also referred to as knitffiti, crochet grenades, and/or yarn bombing is installation art beyond gallery walls.
